Hello. My name is Dr Helen Andrews and I set up Family Matters in Warwickshire in 2012 to offer psychological support and information to new families.
Parents come and see me for a range of reasons. Sometimes they want to learn more about how their baby is developing and how they can support that development. They may come before their baby is born so that they feel confident about giving baby the best start they can. They may come after if they are finding parenting tougher than they thought it would be, or want to make parenting decisions based on the latest scientific knowledge.
Many parents come with particular concerns - maybe their baby seems to cry all the time, has problems sleeping, or they worry they are not bonding like they thought they would.
Family Matters is for anyone who feels that a Clinical Psychologist might be of use in helping them develop an understanding of their baby or in offering guidance in parenting approaches.
People are often surprised that babies and young children have ‘mental health’ at all. In fact, the evidence is strong that the earlier you can support a baby or child who seems to be struggling, the more likely they are to achieve their potential throughout their life, and one of the best ways to support a baby, is by supporting their parents.
I can get involved in a number of ways. I offer a range of services directly to families, such as antenatal groups, one-off consultations and full assessment and intervention, where necessary. Most people start off by coming for a chat.
