Anna Garstan
Dr of Chiropractic and Transformational Life Coach
Anna graduated from the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in 2004 with a Bachelor’s in Human Sciences and a Masters in Chiropractic. She also has a Diploma in Chiropractic Clinical Paediatrics.
Anna was first introduced to chiropractic at the age of 21 when she suffered a sudden attack of lower back pain. After several days incapacitated, she managed to get herself to a chiropractor in her home city of Stockholm. Fascinated by the drug-free and holistic approach, and impressed by the effectiveness of the treatment, she decided to train as a chiropractor.
Following her 5-year course she has worked in Farnham in Surrey, Warwick, Rugby and Hinckley where she developed her skills further, particularly in the area of paediatrics, helping both mothers and babies.
Anna is registered with the General Chiropractic Council and AXA, PPP and all other major health insurance providers
We Love Kids!
Anna is experienced in treating new born babies, toddlers and children.
Some people wonder why more and more parents are taking their children to see chiropractors. The answer is simple: whether we have a large spine or a tiny little one, if that spine is negatively impacting the communication of the nervous system then our body is unable regulate and co-ordinate itself correctly. Nerve irritations (or vertebral subluxations) occur as a part of normal daily life. They may result from physical, chemical and emotional stressors or ‘insults’ to our health, such as bad posture, prolonged postures, sleeping on our stomachs, knocks and falls, poor food choices, dehydration, exposure to chemicals and toxins, and stress and anxiety.
Some research suggests that even before these lifestyle stressors have an impact, nerve irritation may occur in the uterus from awkward positioning, restriction of movement in the womb and exposure to toxins. Subluxations or nerve irritation may also occur from birth complications such as long labours, very fast labours, or forceps or caesarean delivery.
The most common signs of this dysfunction are excessive crying, wind that will not be passed from either end, constipation, reflux, positing, regurgitation/vomiting, failure to latch or feed well, the list goes on. Most of these symptoms come from the newly developed digestive system, however the cause of these symptoms are commonly from abnormal neural control of the digestive system.
Toddler
Correct alignment at this stage, when toddlers are balancing on two feet for the very first time is extremely important in order to give them the best start in life and avoid problems in the future. The number of bumps and falls they have means that it is vital to regularly correct misalignment or blockages in their spine. They are growing so quickly and being so active that if a misalignment were to take place it could affect their development and health. A toddler’s body is not only growing at a phenomenal rate, they are also developing their immune system, motor control and numerous other systems that enable their body to function effectively, chiropractic can aid these systems to develop efficiently
Chiropractic and pregnancy
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is a safe and gentle way to promote comfort and minimise back pain during your pregnancy and to support the natural birthing process. We consider chiropractic care a natural part of your prenatal routine – there is no time in a woman’s life that a chiropractic check-up is more important. In fact research shows us that pregnant mothers who have regular chiropractic care throughout their pregnancy experience greater comfort, less pain as well as shorter labour and delivery times with fewer complications and fewer interventions. As a whole these mothers experience a sense of vitality and wellness throughout their pregnancy and are thus better prepared to deal with the challenges of childbirth.
Anna will work on your spine and pelvis during pregnancy to promote balanced movement and alignment. With the pelvis in a balanced state, the ligaments connected to the uterus maintain an equalized, supportive suspension for the uterus. If the pelvis is out of balance, these ligaments can become torqued and twisted, causing a condition known as uterine constraint. Ensuring that your pelvis and neurology is balanced will help your body to adapt to pregnancy more gracefully and easily and by relieving the tension, baby and mother are more comfortable. Anna is also trained to use the pregnancy specific chiropractic technique referred to as Webster’s technique.
Pregnancy is a special, unique, and private time in a woman’s life. The emotions associated range through the full spectrum from excitement and relief to anxiety and even fear. Every mother needs a support network on this journey, and we are proud that so many mums-to-be choose Park Street Chiropractic Clinic to be on their team.
Every birth story is different too. Anna has two young children, who arrived in the world in very different ways – one with lots of intervention in hospital, and one at home with none at all – she is always happy to discuss her experiences. She understands that everyone wants the best possible outcome, and one that is right for them.
